Spitzkoppe

After our visit to the Cheetah Park, we moved on to a rock formation called Spitzkoppe. However, before we could go anywhere, we first had to get back out of Cheetah Park. Now that we had the correct phone number, the guys said that if we get stuck, give them a call (but not before 7am) and they will come tow us out. So we start off from the campsite just before 7 and off we go. We get about 2 km down the road and surprise, surprise we get completely bogged again. Ruth calls the guys to come get us out. We wait and wait and then finally the calvary arrives... 2 guys on a tractor! Really!? That's supposed to get us out? At first, it wasn't looking good, the tractor was pulling us from the front and neither us nor the tractor were budging. Then he tried to pull us back and we get back a few meters. Back to the front and after much pulling, going back and forth, we finally get out. However, there is another bog up ahead so they follow behind. Not surprisingly, we get stuck, again. This time the tractor is a bit more successful and we are out of that bog a bit faster. So we arrive back to the main road, it's about 1 hour after we started. We get out for a pee break and we notice that there is something sticking out of one of the back tires. We had completely worn off the tread and ruined the tire such that the steel belts wer actually sticking out. So the boys have to help our driver change the tire. I don't know how much a single tire weighs but it took at least 5 guys to hoist the used tire back up on the back of the truck! So, again, 2 hours after starting from the campsite, we are back at the entrance and ready to head to Spitzkoppe.

Most of this part of Namibia is prarie land with nothing but sand and small shrubs. Spitzkoppe is a volcanic rock formation in the middle of the dessert. We arrived there shortly after 4pm. After setting up our tents, some of us (Justin and I were of course in that group) decided to hike up the rocks to get a better view of the rock formations and surrounding land. There was no trail, so we had to kind of make it up as we went. It was a lot of fun and the views that we got once we reached the top (well the top for us as the very top is a vertical cliff that we had no chance of getting up) were magnificent. After a few photos and 1 group shot. We headed back down the rocks to enjoy a night of camping in the bush right next to the rocks!
